Change One Thing, Change Everything

Marshall Goldsmith, a world authority in helping successful leaders get even better says to change everything, change one thing.

Like, if you make an effort to listen better, others will think you respect them more, that you communicate better and that you have more patience.  By changing one thing, everything changes.

I like to use this phrase when working with cancer survivors.  Life has been turned upside down, and many things are happening at once, mostly to you and not particularly initiated by you. But you can always make that one change today that can set you on a path of contributing to your own self care.  What one thing could you do today that could improve your health and fitness? Put down that doughnut?  Walk to the mailbox instead of driving?  Sign up for dance class?

The incredible thing is that if you change one thing today, everything changes.  You are not seeing your path through the same eyes as in the past, so you are bound to view life in a slightly different way looking forward.  Skipping that doughnut sets you on a path of choosing more nutritious meals, at least for today!  Walking to the mailbox proves that you can add more physical activity in your day even when chemo has got you down and you get to feel nature all around you, if even for only a few minutes.  Of course that dance class adds fun, movement and music, along with time where you can feel a bit carefree.

Why not try changing just one thing today and see what changes around you, and how you and your cancer experience changes as a result?
