Hormone Therapy and Breast Cancer

A recent study published in the Archives of Internal Medicine by UCLA researchers found that women taking hormone replacement therapy (HRT) who reported sore breasts had twice the risk of being diagnosed with breast cancer when compared to women on the therapy who did not report sore breasts. This is actually great news becuase sore breasts during HRT may be an easy way to detect breast cancer risk.
Does this mean that if you are taking HRT and you have sore breasts then you must have breast cancer? ABSOLUTELY NOT. It does mean that you should make your physician aware of your pain, and explain your concern in light of the recent findings.
The study incorporated data collected from over 16,000 women in a well-respected ongoing study, the Women's Health Iniative (WHI). WHI data is used by many researchers to make great strides in the standard of care.
